Whilst browsing on flickr for some photos of the L6s around Woodhead for the L6 thread, I though I would throw caution to the wind and search on pylon and I was amazed to find so many interesting and varied photos. Including this one www.flickr.com/photos/woodleighuk/4007290333/... is this some sort of L6 or L8 variety. It is on the Thornton to Creyke Beck 400kV line I think and the photo is taken near to Dunswell just outside Hull. Any clues cheers Paul

The route you are talking about, which circles the north west of Hull, is L8 and looks like strung for 275.

Ah thought it might be, another of the L8 variations then. I don't think I have seen any of those before so another example to add to the list. I am used to the design used to replace the L2s near to Stockport and around Stalybridge.

L8 seems to be a replacement for L2. The route from Iron Acton Substation to Filton changes from L2 to L8. There's also some L8 pylons in the ZF route at Minety Substation. Is this an L6 or an L8 in this picture? i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd486/cmaldridge/DSCF6527.jpgIt is on the A384, near Dartington in Devon, However there are some L2 pylons in the line on the A38 near Plymouth.

That route is fairly recent, 20 years old at the most I'd say. It was built to replace a PL16 route which carried 132 as I guess 132 wasn't enough to service the major energy-using industry which is located on the north bank of the Humber east of Hull which is where that route terminates. For some reason, the final three towers of the old PL16 route remain.
I've never seen any other examples of that design of tower.

Is it 275 or 400kV then? Digging around on Google Earth and Bing Birds Eye views reveals that from Cryeke Beck substation the line to Salt End starts as with what looks like an L8 DT then new design for the next three towers, then the new style towers for 19 towers and that brings us to an L2 DT. This connects to a new style tower that is the start of a run of 42 towers to the DT tower at Salt End North near the A1033 road roundabout. A small continuation of what looks like the L8 design continues to Salt End South substation. The new DT design has shorter middle crossarms with longer bottom and top crossarms. Whereas the D and deviation towers have longer middle crossarms and similar length bottom and top crossarms..... weird ;D
Another one to go and hunt down sometime. Need to bag some L66s first I think!

National Grid's NETSSYS-2011-AppendixA.pdf plan diagrams are useful. Cryeke Beck to Northend North and South appear to be 275kV in an area of otherwise 400kV lines.
NETSSYS-2011-AppendixC.pdf has power flow diagrams. I've always been interested in how things work and where power etc. goes to.

Always good to see L6 towers as they're my favourite design and the second set sure look like L6 towers to me.

Nice to see L6 some with quad (ACSR?) conductors and some with triple (AAAC?), Christopher.
There are some real BEEFY looking L6 towers near the M6 between jcts 5&6 - Hams Hall to Nechells line.
Does anyone know whether the Drakelow to Bustleholm L6 line is still being uprated this year? They were due to move the 400kv/275kv transformers from Drakelow to Bustleholm.
