Nice to see L6 some with quad (ACSR?) conductors and some with triple (AAAC?), Christopher. There are some real BEEFY looking L6 towers near the M6 between jcts 5&6 - Hams Hall to Nechells line. Does anyone know whether the Drakelow to Bustleholm L6 line is still being uprated this year? They were due to move the 400kv/275kv transformers from Drakelow to Bustleholm. Bustleholme has now had transformer bases constructed and at least one of the two (now brand new) 400/275kV transformers delivered. I think that every pylon from Drakelow to Bustleholme will probably need the arcing horns replacing/modifying for 400kV. The insulators appear to be 400kV length to start with. The job is due to be complete by October 2014, so that Drakelow 275kV substation can be demolished to enable extension of the 400kV substation.

The route you are talking about, which circles the north west of Hull, is L8 and looks like strung for 275. Actually, taking a closer look at it I think it may be a JL Eve L6. I've got to admit the twin conductors and short insulators do make it look a lot like an L8 though (especially as the JL Eve is the most L8-like of the L6 suspension towers). True L8 towers (like L12 towers) have outward-sloping diagonal members on the cross-arms, rather than the inward-sloping members on all L2, L3 and L6 towers. Incidentally, what type are those smaller towers further east along that route?

Those smaller towers are most unusual in their appearance. They could almost be an uprated version of the L2 with slight extention of the middle crossarms. They need some further investigation to bag all of the tower designs to be sure.

Very possibly.
And it is worth noting that the route wasn't built until the late 1980s/early 1990s or there abouts as they replaced a PL16 route (three towers were left standing for some reason) which used to run from north Hull to east Hull.

Seriously like are you guys all ex linesman or pylon enthusiasts? Im a linesman and i live in hull so i know exactly what route your talking about, its a L6 line thats been down rated to twin conductor at 275 kv, used to run quad at 400kv but since the building of the adjacent line it was surplus running at that output. The pl16 has always been there as its only built for distribution n not transmission.

Many thanks for the additional information Alex.
Are you able to confirm my hypothesis that the 275kv L8 route was extended from north to east Hull to satisfy the electricity requirements of the industry in east Hull because it was felt that the 132kv PL16 route was no longer adequate?
And regarding the removed PL16 route you state that this line was used for distribution rather than for transmission. Do you know why they removed this route, and also why they left those three final towers as I assumed that they were removed because this route wasn't needed when the 275kv route was built.

Hi Alex, I am just an enthusiast and the design of the towers running east from Creyke Beck are of a design I haven't seen before hence my original posting. The other two lines running into CB are of L6 design of course. The others seem to be a L2/L8/L12 hybrid of some sort. More information on those and any other towers would be most welcome!

One circuit was upgraded last year (+ tower painting) and the other is being upgraded as we speak. The new arcing horns are much shorter than the old ones.
