Wow I saw these linked to the other photo from the same users collection. They look like some Frankenstein pre-grid terminal babies!!! Clearly the 3 arm version is adapted from its 6 arm brother simply by omitting the opposing arms as appropriate. Bet they were fun to install, maintain and remove! You can just imagine some weird science experiment 1950s style horror film going on looking through those windows with big circuit breaker switches and large sparks of electricity and the wires glowing blue from the towers above!!

Hehe yes I thought something similar especially as my Dad told me when I was a youngster that the pylons would zap naughty kids and that a strange monster lived there. I've not seen another sub station like it.

Blimey. As soon as I saw this photo I instantly recognised it as being in Wellington. And yet the last time I saw them was as a kid in the 60's and 70's when we were driving up to Barmouth to see my nan. Can't believe they survived all that time. And I can't believe my ageing brain instantly recalled them!
