Some of these will be similar to the pictures I took at Carlisle last year, but I had more time this time round so they should be better. The other end of the back road that went past the PL4-D90 on the other thread brings you onto the A689(W) at around the right place to be where all the different circuits converge on the north of Carlisle.
Here we have two pre-grid lines and a single circuit currently running 66KV, but which might be a leftover section of the old west coast single circuit grid line. Then again maybe not, it's just that the towers look to be the same design as the towers that run from Lancaster to Penrith-

Just on the other side of the fence from where I was standing there was a pre-grid angle tower (D60?), a single circuit D60 and a pre-grid terminal tower. Note how clean and shiny the two pylons closest to the camera are. The sun was shining on them but they still look remarkably well cared for-

Sharing the field with them are two PL16 terminal towers complete with cages-

More pre-grids and the single circuit line heading east-

Another view of the single circuit D60-

Beautiful, I just love the shape of that one.
Passing through pretty much at 90 degrees to the other lines is this newer line. I'm not sure what it is (Must get back onto The Gorge and refresh my memory!). Lines tee off both sides down to the PL16s with the cages on them. It wasn't until I was viewing the photos at home that I noticed they have twin conductors and insulators-

I know it's obvious, but there are so many to see all at the same time I just kept snapping away.
The pylon before the terminal towers is right beside a roundabout on the main road-

The PL4s and pre-grids on the other thread follow the same line as these newer ones. I think they are JL Eve-

I don't want to offend anyone who may have a particular soft spot for these, but I think modern towers with upswept arms are damned ugly compared to older towers. Just my opinion...
JL Eve and the twin circuit angle towers-

Leaving the main road further east and walking a short distance towards the edge of the town brings you really close to some of the pre-grid towers-

Close up of the top half of the tower-

These towers are similar, though not the same as the pre-grids that have been renewed near Cockermouth. Looking at the Ornance Survey maps, it's just possible that they once could have been part of the same line. I suppose we'll never know-

And a last view form the same spot of a field full of old pylons. Can't wait to get back there with my new camera!-
