Hello, today I met Revallison for a walk to visit the 132kV substation at Howley just to the east of Warrington town centre. This was the first time that I have met another member of PAS for the purposes of looking at towers together and indeed it was Allison's first proper fieldtrip. So after a walk from Warrington Central station to the substation we came across the towers, two of which are PL1 DT towers plus a PL1b ST tower.

The PL1 lines come in from the north of Warrington in the Parkside area and from Carrington near Sale. The PL1b line comes in from the south. Both are I think part of the original PL1 National Grid from the 1930s.
A PL1b S90/ST tower with lots of height extensions on the other side of the River Mersey

The local wildlife wondered what Allison and me were looking at.. they seemed disappointed we had no bread to give them!

Further round on the nearby dual-carriageway road we see the incoming PL1 lines from Winwick/Parkside and Carrington. The Winwick set has newer glass insulators whereas the Carrington set appears to have older red ceramic insulators

A closer look across the field of the two PL1 DT towers. They don't exactly match the ED51143 diagram in the Tower Bible - it is close to the DT 90 Special in the squared off cross arms ends but they don't have the 90 degree crossarms on the back of the tower but do have longer top cross arms.

The Winwick/Parkside circuit PL1 DT tower has a linking cable across the insulators and only one set of down cables into the compound. Note the extra added triangle of steelwork on the lower right cross arm

And the last photo of the pair of PL1 DT towers

It was lovely to meet Allison and to be able to talk pylons to someone else who understands just why I like them so much. And we managed to walk back into town before it started raining heavily whilst sat in the cafe having some lunch.
Enjoy
Cheers Paul
