Hi folks, another walk in the countryside and urban area in my local area. This time a short trip over to Bury on the bus to have a look at the L2 DT tower of the United Utilities VA line that starts from the Kearsley 275/132kV substation seen in my previous photo thread plus the Ringley thread from earlier this year.
The terminal tower at Bury is located on the east bank of the River Irwell and just south of the Wellington Viaduct that crosses the river at this point, this being part of the former Bolton to Bury railway line now mostly converted into a walk and cycleway. The footpath bridge across the river just a smidge downstream of the viaduct afforded the first views of tower VA 26 as did the footpaths alongside and underneath
So lots of detailed photos later I moved onwards and a visit to a model railway shop and lunch later via some buses saw me near to Radcliffe, which is just to the south of Bury. The location I was after was on the road back towards Bolton where three lines cross the fields and road the 132kV UU L7 line to Bolton North, the NGC ZQ L2 400/275kV line from Daines/Carrington/Kearsley to Penwortham and Padiham then the 132kV VA L2 tower line from Kearsley/Ringwood to Bury as seen above. But just to the south of here the L7 ducks under the L2 ZQ line and from the OS maps and aerial imagery it isn't too clear what happens. So a good excuse to get up close and have a look! What actually happens is that the L7 line comes up between the VA and ZQ lines from Kearsley substation and then has to switch to the west side of the ZQ so that it can turn off towards Bolton a few miles further north. To achieve this the L7 line uses two L7 DT towers of differing designs the narrow ended pointed crossarm type and the more bulkier looking heavy braced tower with square ended crossarms. The west side circuit ducks under the ZQ line but the east side terminates on each L7 DT tower and is presumably cabled between the two. It is clear that the ZQ alignment was adjusted here too with two D towers perhaps changed for a D with extra base panels to clear the L7 line and then a D30 to swing the line back towards the original D30 to the north.
Photo link to follow tomorrow once I have uploaded them
Cheers Paul
