Here are some photos I've enlarged and enhanced from the Brtian from above archive. It's the original Penwortham - Stannah 132Kv double circuit. It looks like a PL4 but the suspension towers are narrower than PL4 and look like a PL1 / pre PL16 hybrid. Note the "N" support is present on every cross arm, not just the centre. The PL16 with reinforced cross arms has two "N" supports per cross arm, like a miniature L2 almost. flic.kr/s/aHsjKiXtrwIdentifying this type of tower will be most appreciated!I remember seeing the line being dismantled in the summer of 1976 upon completion of the L8 275Kv replacement, part of the Heysham ring project. Note also the pre-grid 33Kv double circuit that supplied Fleetwood prior to the Fleetwood power station going online in 1956.

Interesting photos yes they look a bit like PL4 but then. They look to me the same as the pre-grid design that comes out of Preston and runs alongside the Ribble towards the main river crossings? I seem to recall that this line was altered to run into Penwortham but the original line must have continued over towards Stanah.

Yeah, I think they do look a bit like PL4 pylons, there's some near Broughton Gifford in Wiltshire.
And there's one in the pre grid line near Brean where the A38 goes over the M5, other pylons in the line look like PL1 & PL16.

Thanks guys. That Penwortham pre-grid tower is much broader than these. They remind me of the narrow based PL1 towers that run adjacent to the M1 from Luton to Watford.
I thought the term "pre-grid" only applied to 33Kv & 66Kv custom design towers whereas 132Kv was the first standard in the National Grid voltage in 1928.
It does get confusing because some of these old towers look identical at first glance....

That's an unmodified JL Eve D3 circa 1929. Neat. Les
