Where is Winwick you ask? Well its north of Warrington on the A49 road or north on the West Coast Mainline And what juicy delights can you see at Winwick? Well some nice PL series towers mainly PL16s plus some L4Ms plus two non-standard towers one of which is soon to be replaced. Hence the reason for my unplanned visit on Wednesday 29th June to record the tower whilst it is still standing as the replacement L4M D90 has already been erected! The arrangement of towers has been altered recently and in the past as well and essentially there are two lines one PL1b and PL16 that merge into one and terminate at the nearby Parkside substation on the site of the former colliery. The other PL16 line used to be linked to Parkside I think but now bypasses and just further along a new junction with a L4M line from Fiddler's Ferry power station has been made. I will post the photo links asap once I've added them to a new photobucket album. Cheers Paul

Excellent photos - I've not got the foggiest idea on the custom PL16's shown here - first thoughts on the one with the staggered arms was some flavour of L3ST but it isn't - but mayby a very modified PL16DT? They're a lot better looking than these L4M efforts, you would have thought a PL16 D90 would be OK in the custom pylon's place. Maybe the D90 wasn't developed when these lines went up. The Blaw Knox PL16 (Scottish) 51106 shown here seems to be well nigh ubiquitous. Long may they last. The powerstation is quite striking is that part of the world really that flat? Les

Les Yes, a weird looking tower all round. I'm not certain that this is the original configuration of the lines as shown as I suspect the PL1b line might have continued to the east and joined up with the second PL16 line that now seems to bypass the staggered arm tower. The other PL16 junction tower would appear to have been erected to replace a D60 or D90 tower sometime in the early to mid 80s and the tee of the new L4M line added. Hmm I will go and dig my old Pathdfinder maps out to see if I can make sense. Yes it is reasonably flat on the Mersey plain to the north of Warrington and only a gradual slope from the high ground down towards the river itself. Cheers Paul

A quick update on the Winwick pylons observed whilst on my way to and from my first 2012 fieldtrip down at Frodsham.
The PL1B single line has been removed completely now. The PL16 line coming in from the west that was originally only live on one circuit with the other earthed off this is now a double circuit that feeds into Parkside el sub via the new L4M D90 tower that you saw in the field next to that weird looking tower with the staggered height crossarms. So a little bit of history all now swept away in the course of the last month or so certainly since January when I last went past Winwick on a train.

No sadly as was on a train at the time. I could try a quick visit sometime soon if I do a fieldtrip to nearby Warrington to look at some PL1 goodness.
