Nice set of photos. I think these towers were mentioned in a recent thread and I believe these three towers shown were originally intended for a substation that was to be build at Portskewett once the 400kV had come under the Severn.
The additions to the top arms suggests this is a variation on the standard L6 DT90 tower as the tower at Stalybridge lacks the top arm extentions but otherwise the same design of tower.
Re the route codes from what I have noted over the years most L2 and some L3 routes use codes starting with
V to
Z e.g.
Macclesfied to Bredbury (my local) L2 is
YVStalybridge to Bredbury L2 is
ZZCBredbury to South Manchester L2 is
YOSouth Manchester to Daines and Carrington L6 is
ZZNDrakelow to Cellarhead to Daines L2 is
ZEStalybridge to Thorpe Marsh L6 is
4ZOTrawsfyndd to Pentir is
4ZCSo the 400kV L6 routes that came after the original 275kV L2 supergrid and uprated lines to 400kV are usually coded 4xx whereas the 275/400 L2 and L3 lines are coded
Vx to
Zxx. I guess they ran out of codes between VA and ZZ so went onto ZZB to ZZZ??
Branches from main routes are coded as per the example
ZEA is the branch from the main
ZE route. However I am not sure if the same would apply to a 4xx coded route - this might be something like 4ZZA line. I haven't seen any coded like that but then again I haven't seen all the lines lol.
Towers are also subcoded with the individual tower number but as shown in the photo then can be suffixed with
A, B, C etc. where additional towers have been inserted in the line between say tower 4YX 149 and 4YX 150.
However if a tower is coded say YV 47R then this means that the original tower has been replaced by a new one in the same position perhaps due to damage, age, or in the case of YV 47R this was reduced in height and moved back by about 50-60 ft to its new position as it was in the way of the proposed A6M bypass in 1991, which as you may have guessed never got built
. Another example would be ZZC 41R, this was originally an L2 D tower when the line was built but was later replaced in the same position by an L2 DJ90 tower to allow the YV line to connect.
This is information that I have collected over the years, I'm not saying its correct but it seems right.
Would it be worth making a list of known route codes or is that taking things a little too far??
