Coming soon, a selection of L3 goodness around Thornbury on the 275kV English-Welsh interconnector that crosses over the River Severn. Then more L3s around Weston-super-Mare and nearby Worle on a 132kV feeder circuit with dual conductors. Oh and some pre-grid 33kV towers making an appearance too.
Links to follow soon!

I've been to Weston Super Mare, there are some L3 pylons there, there's some other pylons there too but I'm not sure what design they are.

I went to Weston Super Mare the other day to see a friend of mine. Managed to get a few pictures of the L3 pylons, I think there's about 2 L7s in the line.
At Thornbury isn't that one of the L3 lines from Iron Acton Substation?

Yes the L7s are where the line crosses the dual carriageway and leading into WSM and so follows that some original L3 towers were in the way of the road and so new replacement towers were used.
Thornbury is indeed on the route of the L3 XL line that originates or at least calls into Iron Acton substation. I'm not sure if the XL route starts there but the line continues further east/south-east towards Minety el sub.

I do have a thread for Iron Acton Substation. Could the L3 XL line be in some of my pictures?

Yes that would be the L3 line with twin conductors running west from the substation so that would be the XL line. Not sure if the other part of the line from Iron Acton to Melksham is the same code or different.

Ok thanks Christopher. The tower I saw at Thornbury is XL 87, so that begs the question from which end the route is numbered? It can't be from the Melksham end as the number is too low, a quick and rough tower count over on Bing Maps OS map view confirms that number 1 tower is at the Whitson end of the line. So the tower count at Melksham must be easily 200+ I guess.

Having spent the last week down at Weston-super-Mare I noticed that the L3 AT line has received a partial insulator upgrade on most of the towers. However not all of the D2 towers have new slimline insulators on both circuits so some still have the old red ceramic insulators on one side only. Not sure why this is but maybe related to wayleave and access to the towers. The conductor wires remain untouched as twin bundles with original spacers. Therefore I would imagine that this line is to be kept with a link to the new proposed Churchill 400/132kV substation.
Related to this in the news last week was that the Government are calling in the cost of the Hinkley Point to Seabank line saying it is far too expensive and want a competitive tender to find a reduced cost line instead.
And the pre-grid line that runs from Weston towards Taunton is under threat of undergrounding in the Weston area to reduce the visual impact although the towers were still active when I saw them last week. I was hoping to obtain some more photos of them but I didn't get the chance.
