My cousin's workmate gave him some photos of Namibia for me. (Bit odd, but I guess it's one of these things that stick in the mind, having a mate whose cousin is into pylons!) I'm told there are more coming my way on a CD in due course.

WOW , that second picture is fascinating. One phase of what looks like a very high voltage line appears to be taken off down to that little " substation" enclosure ? Anybody any idea exactly what this does / whats going on here ? That largest of the three insulator-towers in the compound looks like it could be a sealing end ( and the other two are presumably a surge diverter and / or a switch / isolator . ) This would suggest an out going underground cable ? And whats in the cabinet I wonder? Its possible its just a monitoring station / point , but whatever it is , what intrigues me is why only one phase? I have heard , in other countries with other practices , that very high voltages are sometimes transformed immediately ( ie , in one stage ) down to very low ( ie " household" mains voltage ) for small consumers / a few dwellings , etc , in very remote areas. This is not that strange , small 132KV to 240 volt single phase transformers are not uncommon here in the UK in large substations to provide power / lighting in the substation directly from the incoming 132KV line. I wonder if thats whats going on here and that sealing end is a cable feeding a transformer in the cabinet ? There appears to be a small line on poles nearby . Possibly the low voltage line ? Whatevers going on its fascinating ? Anyone any ideas ?
JPS.
