I know what many of the bits and pieces of pylons and substations are for but I'm puzzled about this one. What are the "basket like things" on 2 of the phases that come out of the bushings on the wall of the 400KV indoor substation at Wylfa in the image below? i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/supergrid/img_0187.jpgAnybody know?

Hi blueshift. I ought to know what these things are , Ive been in the industry for over 20 years , so I feel a bit silly when I say Im not 100% sure . ( My job and " speciality " was under ground cables , though Ive worked on everything over the years including substations and overhead lines , etc .) I still feel a bit of a fool that I ought to be able to answer your question.
What I think they are ( I am almost sure ) is air cored reactors ( inductances ) used to balance the capacitance of the transmission line and correct the power factor.
I am going to get back to you on this one if thats OK , as I have an ex colleague who will know exactly what these are once hes had a look . As far as I know its only necessary to connect these inductances across two of the phases , hence there are only two , not one on each phase.
Sorry I cant be more helpful at the moment but I will be back to you on this with a proper answer once Ive spoken to my friend who will know.
JPS.
