Hi folks, I recently visited the substation near to Atherton and Leigh to have a look at the L2 and L7 towers. The incoming line is the L2 route that starts near to Kearsley substation and can be seen in my thread of the same name done some years ago now. This is a 132kV line using all L2 towers and coded YA with the final tower being YA 40. What is to me unusual is the arrangement of the feeds to the substation plus the connection to the L7 DT line which runs a short distance north before terminating near the Salford to Wigan railway line. The YA line was refurbished some years ago and converted from the original twin conductors to the single conductors as shown. And possibly at the same time the DT line was also done. I am not certain what the original substation configuration was or whether there was any wired connection between the two terminal towers. Now it is effectively a through line and feeds from both circuits are taken from the L2 DT tower down to the substation and not via a bucket termination as is often the case. The towers at the substation are quite visible from the nearby main road: The penultimate tower on the YA line is this L2 D60 seen beyond the houses YA 39. Walking in to the recreation fields behind the substation offers these views. Note the extra arms on the L7 making this a DT90 Note how the connections are arranged down from the cross arms on the L2 DT tower The next tower in the L7 line is this D10 or D30 A view across the football pitch towards the two towers Cheers Paul
