In a similar fashion to some users on here I have used the power of Google Maps to trace one of my favourite childhood lines. I placed these pylons for ID several years ago and received no comment, but with the knowledge I have now I am confident that they are at least pre-grid pylons. Since I've only seen one or two towers from the M27, I've never physically seen the rest of the line before.
The pictures are from google maps, but maybe someone will feel inspired to document them in real life. These pylons are similar to some pre-grid PL1 types, mainly differing the large "wing-like" extensions. They are based in the Romsey / Upton area near Testwood.
The line starts off at a substation between the M271 and the M27. Here is a view from the M271, the two pylons in question are the left hand two:
These pylons carry on over the A3057 and into Upton Crescent. Here we look back and see one of the deviation towers (D90?). This tower is the third tower in the line, the one after the two you see in the first image:
Turning around we see the first suspension tower in the series. This and the previous tower are right in people's gardens! I doubt many people would be happy with that.
They then carry on over the field where they can be seen from the M27. Before turning away and up towards Upper Toothill Road, they are joined by a L3 line which parallels them for the rest of their existence. You used to be able to see them turning away, but since those days trees have grown up and obscured the view.
These pylons then continue at a slightly obscured angle along Upper Toothill Road. A view looking back:
And ahead:
They then intersect Packridge Lane a few towers along:
And then one tower along they share the fate of nearly all pre-grid pylons: they split into poles! Blasphemy! In this case two separate pole lines which eventually merge into a single six-wire line.
There are 13 of these unusual towers in the line, and I have not seen similar design anywhere else. The route can be found here: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z4ZZm8DTNzC4.k2zix5MO3Imw
