To underline the points we are making about regarding L6 with single insulators being newer, all of the L6 towers in and around Drax all have single insulators and IIRC Drax is much newer that Ferrybridge and all the L6 towers at Ferrybridge have double insulators.
At this point it's worth mentioning one anomoly whereby part of the rotue is single insulators and the other part has double insulators. I am referring to the Stalybridge to Thorpe Marsh line which is the route which travels through the Woodhead tunnel. The towers on the part of the route from Woodhead to Stalybridge have one insulator whereas from Dunford Bridge to Thorpe Marsh the towers have two insulators.

That is indeed correct. I photographed both sets at Woodhead and Dunford Bridge. Possibly the reason why the pylons from Woodhead have a single insulator string is that they now have twin, not quad conductors.

The Hams Hall to Coventry L6 line (near the M6 motorway) still has double insulators on some suspension towers. Some towers have them on both sides and some on one.

Paul The Woodhead to Stalybridge section of the 4ZO route was originally twin glass insulators for the suspension towers and quad glass insulators for the deviation towers with quad conductors. They were later replaced not sure just when with singles and double grey ceramic insulators and the angled twin conductors. Cheers Paul

The Stalybridge to Woodhead section must have been replaced not that long after the route was built because I never recall that section ever having double insulators.

I had a look on flickr for photos of trains along the Longdendale valley coming down from Woodhead tunnel towards Hadfield and whilst most of the photos focus on the last days of the BR class 76 electrics some of the photos yield good clues and you can clearly see the double and quad insulators. Although this area isn't far from my doorstep it is one place I have never really visited. I think the Woodhead to Stalybridge portion was redone sometime in the late 90s or early 00s I would have to dig further.

maybe but that part of the route only had single insulators when the Woodhead line was still in operation - the track was lifted in 1981.

The Drakelow to Bustleholm L6 line has been refurbished (in recent years?) including the fitting of single insulators on the suspension towers. There is one suspension tower that still has (new?) double insulators near the M6 / A34 Great Barr junction (Jct 7). I puzzle why?

Maybe they couldn't get full access to the tower due to a wayleave access issue??

Yes all posters above, the L6 quad lines with double suspension insulators and quad on the Angle towers, show us their age, I mean, it informs of their date in service. zulumike.

Also the colour of the insulators will give a clue as to the last time they were replaced going from the original red ceramic, through the clear and browny glass insulators then to the grey ceramics and back to the clear or green glass insulators at present. Off the top of my head the L6 Deeside to Pentir line is still quad conductors and double or quad insulators except for the section over the top around Penmaenmawr heading towards Bangor. The Deeside to Trawsfynydd L2 line has retained its red ceramic insulators beyond the double tee to Legacy so that hasn't seen much attention for a while.
